Sunday: Travel Day

More photos here
Long day. Started at 3:45 a.m. after going to bed at like 1:30 a.m. It is now 10:05 local time (1 hour behind Eastern Standard Time) and we're starting to wrap things up. The morning person in me is protesting. Je suis TIRED. The flighit from Philly to New Orleans was smoothe as well as the drive from Clarks Summit to Philly. However, we are now missing 4 bags. The drive from New Orleans to Moss Point was ... enlightening.

I heard from a friend that New Orleans was "up & running" but this was clearly not the case when neighborhoods look like ghost towns, no, homes like Post-WWII London or Hiroshima and blue tarps everywhere. Another sign that New Orleans is not flourishing is the difficulty we had in finding a place to eat lunch. Clearly what my friend meant was the French Quarter is "up and running." I guess we will have to see for ourselves.

Wow! Sounds like you all had quite the day.

Glad to hear you made it to Mississippi safely. I can't wait to read about your daily adventures!

Glad you are all there safely (except for the four bags!). AnnaBeth, it was interesting to hear your description of things down there. I think it's easy for most of us to imagine that it's not so bad anymore, since the news agencies have left this story behind long ago. I'm so glad to be part of a community that is ready to make a real tangible difference. Good luck with your work today.

Peace,
Scott

Hey Mission Team

What fun it is to see your pictures and to hear how things are going so far. Did you find your bags?

Can't wait to check back in later and hear how your first day of work and play went.

I'm keeping you in my prayers :)

Love,
Demery

Hi Everyone!

Let us know what your day was like so far. It's almost 90 here and very humid. What's it like there??

Hi Guys,

This is so cool - Welcome to the 21 century! This will certainly make those of us who were not able to join you feel like one of the group. I will love reading this everyday.

Great to see a Youth Group from our Diocese on a Mission Trip down N'awlins way! My 24-year-old daughter, Bethany, who used to be active in St. Gabriel's (and some Diocesan) Youth activities, lives and works in New Orleans French Quarter, as a server at Crescent City Brewhouse (a great place to grab a bite to eat...on Decatur Street near the famous Cafe du Monde.) She and her boyfriend love the city....they left the day before Katrina and returned several months later to help it get back on its feet. It's a slow process. I believe a lot of businesses are waiting to see what this hurricane season brings. God Bless you on your mission...there's SO MUCH work to be done. I'll keep you in my prayers!

Hey all,

Hope your day went well. Scott is right that we tend to forget that people in the Gulf Coast are still facing a huge challenge. We are proud of you for caring enough to lend a hand.

Keep the thoughts (and pictures) coming.

Pat and Gina Conaboy

PS. I checked the car - no bags!

AnnaBeth, What a great intro note on your mission trip. Your observations put things back into perspective as to why you are all down there, and why so many people are supporting your efforts from here. Tonight's news reported that Texas got hit with alot of rain today, and will likely get dumped on again tonight/tomorrow (Tues). Made me wonder if this is going to affect you guys, and whether you are going into the "Ark Building Business" instead of drywalling. Keep dry... Keep in good spirits... We'll keep in touch. (Bengay will be available when you get back.) Christine

I am glad to see your display of the depth of the problem on the gulf coast. What got me most was the pictures which appeared to be from the Biloxi area. They look like the same pictures I took when I was there in October last year. Sometimes I think that the pictures will never go away. But thanks to groups like yours the pictures will change. Not today and not tomorrow but they will change.

Love Dad

P.S. Me thinks it is time to start planning the next trip.
